How it all began
The idea for Business Manager NZ came after I left a large franchise dealership, unsure of my next move. Initially, I thought I’d get into vehicle brokering, but it quickly became clear that the market was oversaturated with others doing the same thing. After six months off, I started to go stir crazy and decided to try my hand at some relief business manager work. On a whim, I put the idea out on social media, and the response was immediate - I was booked for a sales event the very next day.
That first day, I walked into a dealership I’d never worked with before, representing a brand I didn’t know, and realised something important: every dealership may have its own name on the door, but they all face the same fundamental challenges. The day flew by, and I found myself not only enjoying it but feeling like I’d found exactly what I was meant to do. Soon, I was booked in weekly, covering rostered days off and holiday relief, and things grew quickly. Before long, I had three dealerships vying for the same days, and it was clear I couldn’t do it alone. We brought on a second person, and soon after, a third.
It surprised me that no one had fully dedicated themselves to filling this role. Some brokers offered relief work on the side, but no one was committing to a full service relief business manager agency. That’s where we come in. Dealerships are often left scrambling to find coverage when business managers take time off, sometimes putting sales staff in to fill the gap. Not only can this mean losing the sale, but it also misses the chance to maximise profitability.
